Paducah citizens have a new place to drop their recyclables pending the closure of Greater Paducah Sustainability Project Recycle Now March 27th. The city’s current waste contract with Republic Services is being expanded to include single stream recycling.
“When we received notice from GPS that they were going to close their facility to the public on March 27th, we really accelerated our actions in trying to make sure that we had another location for folks to go,” city spokesperson Pam Spencer said.
GPSP Recycle Now was originally scheduled to close at the end of June but lacked the funds to last through March.Beginning April 1st, recyclers can drop cans, paper, cardboard, and plastic at the Republic transfer station on Burnett Street at no charge.
The city’s solid waste contract with Republic expires in June. City Manager Jeff Pederson says the city may extend that contract while negotiating a curbside recycling contract.
