The One Book, One Campus, One Community Read project at West Kentucky Community and Technical College has inspired a community-wide art contest centered around the book Orphan Train by Christina Baker Kline, an historical novel staged between 1850-1930 and the effort to bring orphan children by train from northern cities to America's heartland. On Sounds Good, Kate Lochte speaks with Paducah School of Art and Design Dean Paul Aho about how to enter the contest.
Paul Aho says the Arts in Focus program is steering the course for the community read. He believes that literacy is important and so is 'visual literacy.' He encourages artists to participate in the contest. The focus is to create artwork or illustrating a scene from the book or the subject matter true to the time period.

There's no fee for the entry. First, second and third place will receive cash prizes. Submitted artwork will be on display at the Clemens Fine Arts Center alongside the gallery exhibition of ceramics by Harris Deller, Professor Emeritus at SIU, with an opening reception on February 19. Artwork will be on display through the visit of author Christina Baker Kline on March 31 and April 1.
