Paducah City Commission Considers Rezoning Midtown

Matt Markgraf, WKMS news

The Paducah Board of Commissioners is considering zoning ordinances that would change Midtown from a residential area to commercial. The City Planning Commission is recommending that approximately 10 acres encompassing parts of Kentucky Avenue, Clark Street and South 31st street be rezoned from a low and medium density residential zone to a convenience and service zone.

There are 38 properties at address ranges:  3101-3230 Kentucky Avenue; 3101-3213 Clark Street; and 243-247 South 31st Street.

The Planning Commission heard testimony from local residents in December regarding the zone change. Planning Director Tammy Tracy says the rezoning decision is based on significant changes in that area and proposed development projects.

Commissioner Sandra Wilson said, “It’s great to see new development and interest in the city.  I’ve seen the plans and think there are some great things planned.”

Commissioner Sarah Stewart Holland made motions to add the condition that retail package liquor stores, tobacco stores, vape or electronic cigarette shops, and any other establishments that sell similar products be prohibited.

The amendments were approved unanimously. The next vote is scheduled for March 13.
