Owensboro May Seek Senior Livability Designation

DAVID BENBENNICK, WIKIMEDIA COMMONS, PUBLIC DOMAIN

Owensboro wants to be a city that welcomes seniors with community services and an enjoyable lifestyle.

Mayor Tom Watson said the city is considering applying for the AARP 'Network of Livable Communities’ designation.

That certification shows the availability of housing, transportation, health services and social activities.

The Messenger-Inquirer reports if Owensboro is awarded the designation, it would join four other Kentucky cities that have earned the AARP or World Health Organization ‘livability’ status – Bowling Green, Berea, Louisville and Lexington.

The criteria Owensboro could improve to meet the livability designation would be 'walkability' and 'access to neighborhood parks.

The city has recently been noted for attracting millennial homebuyers. City officials said the two groups are not mutually exclusive, because making Owensboro more attractive to seniors just means it’s a good place to live for people of all ages.
