Owensboro has launched a program to get homeless veterans off the street.

The city is working with the Veterans Administration and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development on the project.

Owensboro Mayor Ron Payne said four apartment communities in the city have agreed to give priority to veterans.

“We will be working with these apartment complexes and our area community services organization to do everything we can to find these veterans a home," said Payne. "It is a disgrace for us to have these men and women come back from defending this country and not have a home to go to.”

Payne said one veteran has already been placed in housing and the push is on to identify other homeless veterans.

“We’re going to focus on the temporary shelters where people go to stay overnight and try to see if we can’t seek out these homeless veterans and find them a place to live,” said Payne.

Payne said the apartment complexes are subsidized by HUD, and housing has already been found for one veteran.
