Outgoing U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to Speak at SIU Carbondale

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is delivering his last public lecture before leaving office at Southern Illinois University Carbondale next week. 

Ban speaks at 11:15 a.m. in the Student Center ballroom on Wednesday. Ban Ki-moon’s talk is titled “What I Have Learned and Would Like to Pass On.’ According to a release, SIU officials suggested the topic for the outgoing secretary-general, who steps down from his post at the end of this year.

Ban was born in the Republic of Korea in 1941 and is the U.N.’s 8th secretary-general. He took office in 2007 and was re-elected in 2011.

As the head of the U.N., Ban’s priorities have included a range of geopolitical and humanitarian issues including food and energy issues, climate change, economic challenges and pandemics. The event is free. Doors open at 10 and a reception will follow.

Antonio Guterres is the 9th  secretary-general of the United Nations and takes office January 1.

Prior to that, he was a graduate and undergraduate assistant. He is currently the host of the international music show Imported on Sunday nights at 10 p.m.
