Other Earthquakes Not a Sign for Kentucky

By Stu Johnson

Lexington, KY – Earthquakes in Haiti, Chile and Turkey have Kentuckians thinking about their own fault line. But Mike Lynch of the Kentucky Geological Survey says those earthquakes aren't an indicator of what might happen along the New Madrid fault line.

"What they mean to each other and what they mean to any other area where earthquakes may occur is essentially nothing."

Lynch says earthquakes should be viewed in the context of regional geologic conditions. New Madrid may experience dozens of tremors in a single month. But, Lynch adds the vast majority can only be detected by seismic instruments.
