Gerard St. Amand has been chosen to serve as interim president for Northern Kentucky University.

The Kentucky Enquirer reports the board of regents voted unanimously Wednesday to select the professor from Northern Kentucky's Chase School of Law. St. Amand will take over for Geoffrey Mearns in May after spring graduation.

Mearns, who served nearly five years as university president, announced in January that he would leave to become president of Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana.

NKU is soliciting bids from executive search consultants to assist with the search for a new president. The request for proposals said the board expects to hire a new president by Sept. 1.
