No Budget...

By Tony McVeigh

Frankfort, KY – The primary purpose of regular legislative sessions in even numbered years in Kentucky is to pass a new state budget. But after meeting for 60-days, lawmakers have failed their primary duty. They left Frankfort without passing a budget. Senate President David Williams blames House Democrats.

"There was only one document still ready for consideration, that would have given us a two-year budget, and that was the conference report we sent down there last week. That would have given us a full two-year budget without a road plan."

But House Speaker Greg Stumbo blames Senate Republicans for the lack of a budget. Stumbo says the Senate should have at least approved the continuation spending plan offered late in the session by House Democrats. Failure to pass a budget means Gov. Beshear must call a special session on the budget before July 1st, at a cost to taxpayers of $64,000 a day.
