New Sawmill to Bring 30 Jobs to Union County

A Union County family is investing $1.1 million to transform a five-building  former lumberyard in Sturgis into a zero-waste sawmill. The Wood Mill is expected to create 30 jobs.

Amy, Jim, and Matt Hutchison along with Perry and Michael Hopper decided to start the mill after discovering there were no local facilities to process forest waste from their logged land. The Wood Mill will produce pallets, railroad ties, heat-treated firewood, sawdust and crafted wood specialty products.

The owners will source wood from their own land and purchase logs from local individuals and companies. Production could begin as early as June.

The Kentucky Economic Development Finance Authority has preliminarily approved the company for tax incentives up to $460,000 dollars.

A proud native of Murray, Kentucky, Allison grew up roaming the forests of western Kentucky and visiting national parks across the country. She graduated in 2014 from Murray State University where she studied Environmental Sustainability, Television Production, and Spanish.
