Nearly 1,000 volunteers from around Western Kentucky are building a community playground in Paducah this week.
The Rotary Club of Paducah is leading 20 four-hour shifts with plans of a ribbon cutting ceremony this Sunday. Rotary Club of Paducah’s project spokesperson David Morse says the city and Paducah Power started construction on the $200,000 playground’s foundation last week and volunteers started putting up basic support units Monday.
“Probably six or seven months ago, we were looking at celebrating our 100th anniversary as a club. About the same time, the City of Paducah had started talking about the health park. And the idea just kind of came that maybe we should join in and combine our efforts and do something really big,” Morse said.
The 4,000 square foot playground is located between three different neighborhoods, according to Morse, on the corner of 13th street and Martin Luther King Drive. It will include a rope wall, rock wall, castles, swings, slides, and monkey bars.
Morse says this is the largest volunteer project the local club has conducted. The playground is funded by the Rotary Club of Paducah, Rotary grants, and donations from individuals and businesses. Morse says the group is still accepting volunteers, especially for shifts on Saturday and Sunday. Visit the project website or call 270-564-5746 to find out how to help.
