Murray State Names New Football Coach

Murray State Athletics

Murray State University’s football team has named its next leader just hours after former coach Chris Hatcher took the top spot at Samford University.

Offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Mitch Stewart will become the 18th head coach for a struggling Racers team that finished 3-9 this season, including a 1-7 record in Ohio Valley Conference play.

Stewart has been with the squad five years, with four of those as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

You can find Stewart's coaching history below:

  • Spring 2006 – Graduate assistant quarterbacks coach for Valdosta State, his alma mater.
  • Summer 2006 – Offensive coordinator assistant at Newman High School in Georgia.
  • 2007 to 2010 – Served on the Georgia Southern football coaching staff. Worked with wide receivers and handled team travel.
  • 2010 to present – Served on Murray State’s coaching staff.

Hatcher officially became Samford’s head coach this afternoon. He’s also been with the Racers since 2010; his overall record stands at 121-57. HisMSU record is 27-30.
He’ll be formally introduced at Samford University Friday at 11 a.m. Hatcher replaces former coach Pat Sullivan, who resigned earlier this month after eight seasons.
