Murray Main Street Hosts Trivia Fundraiser for Downtown

Downtown Murray Kentucky, Facebook

Murray Main Street hosts a fundraiser trivia night at the Murray Banquet Center on Friday, February 20th at 6 p.m. One day after last year's trivia event was the night of the first downtown building collapse. On Sounds Good, Murray Main Street Manager Deana Wright says this underscores the importance of the event and in helping to support the cause for historic preservation in Murray.

Deana Wright says the trivia night is a friendly but fierce competition - noting that the Playhouse in the Park team has won three years in a row, so other teams may be looking to break the streak. There are seven rounds of trivia in categories ranging from literature to sports to geography. Teams of eight can sign up by calling Wright at 270-759-9474. The cost is $160 per team for the night of competition and a dinner of BBQ & pulled chicken.

On The Future of Downtown Murray

Recent town hall meeting suggestions include more retail, getting more members of the community involved, and incorporating the arts. She says Murray Main Street hopes for 2015 to be the "Year of Opportunity" - to start rebuilding and bringing Downtown back to the forefront of everyone's thoughts. "It's where Murray started. It is Murray." says Wright, "And we need to make sure that we keep it there and keep a strong hold on our historic fabric of Murray."

Last year, in response to the building collapse and other issues, Wright says they had more than a dozen property owners looking into taking preventative measures in securing their properties. Wright says that they were moving forward and doing pretty well when the fire happened and the Downtown lost five buildings in that disaster.

Now, Wright says, the community needs to push forward and stay positive to have a downtown that everyone's proud of.
