Murray Independent, Graves County School Boards Approve Tax Increases

Two western Kentucky school districts have taken advantage of the chance to raise their tax revenue by 4 percent, as allowed by the Kentucky Department of Education.

Murray Independent Schools and Graves County Schools have both approved tax increases on real and personal property. Graves County Superintendent Kim Dublin says her board voted Tuesday night to raise their tax from 39.5 cents per $100 of assessed property to 41.3 cents per $100.

“I like to put it in these terms - a house that is appraised at $100,000, it will be an extra $18 a year," Dublin said.

Meanwhile, Murray Independent superintendent Bob Rogers said his board voted to increase their tax from 59.8 cents per $100 dollars to $61.9 cents. That means an extra $20 per year for a house appraised at $100,000.

“We hope very much that the citizens of Murray feel like that this is a good investment in the future of our children," Rogers said. "We do have the lowest tax rate of any independent school district in western Kentucky.”

Both superintendents say the added revenue will go towards state-mandated personnel raises and transportation.
