Murray Finance Evaluation

By Rebecca Feldhaus

Murray, KY – Representatives from businesses in Murray met on Monday to discuss the city's financial future. Murray has pulled from 700-thousand dollars worth of reserves this year and wants to re-evaluate so it doesn't happen again in subsequent years. Murray's director of administration Matt Mattingly says the committee should consider new ideas in revenue.

"We know about 14,000 individuals are employed in the city of Murray. Of those 14,000, 60 per cent commute to the city to work. We have two ways to receive funds from commuter workers. One is a city sticker, which we do, and one is a payroll tax. They both have advantages and disadvantages."

Mattingly says the payroll tax is the one initiative the city doesn't already utilize. The next meeting in the series of nine is on February 4th at the rotary club. Mattingly invites the community to voice their thoughts at the open meeting on March 1st at 6pm at the Robert O. Miller conference center downtown.
