Muhlenburg Coal Revival

By Chad Lampe

Greenville, KY – Coal is making a comeback in Muhlenberg County. The Owensboro Messenger-Inquirer reports that mining jobs had declined from more than 3,500 in 1977 to under 1,000 in 2008, but now the county is seeing a revival. Ohio-based KenAmerican Resources announced last week its Paradise Mine will reopen at the end of the month and eventually will offer 250 to 300 jobs. That's on the heels of Armstrong Coal Co. opening an underground mine last year and Oxford Mining Co. taking over some surface
mines.
