Murray's Town & Gown Community Band and Chorus perform their 4th annual Freedom Fest concert Saturday night at 8 in Murray State University's Lovett Auditorium. Maestro Todd Hill says the free concert features a wide variety of patriot tunes and deep music from a community of performers diverse in age. He joins Mark Welch and Tracy Ross on Sounds Good with an overview of the music and other Freedom Fest events in Murray, and says the performance will be done in time for the fireworks.
If it rains on the 4th of July that won't stop the Town & Gown Community Band from performing inside Lovett Auditorium in a free show as part of Murray's Freedom Fest. Patriot tunes include "Stars and Stripes Forever," "Americans We," a salute to the armed forces, "Battle Hymn of the Republic," "God Bless America," "Take My Hand, Precious Lord," "The Light Eternal," "America Exultant" and a salute to George M. Cohan by the new Town and Gown Chorale under the direction of Brad Almquist.
Mark Welch says, "It's all the best of what we love about congregational singing, people gathering together to make music, but also coming to a performance where an ensemble has worked and prepared and in a very hospitable way offering some of America's best loved music for all of us to share."
Todd Hill adds that it's community music making, just having an opportunity for people to make good music. He says it's very moving to turn around and hearing the audience sing along.
