In the wake of a Texas college’s rejection of applications from students in Ebola-stricken countries, Murray State University has opted to withhold them.

MSU Provost Jay Morgan says those applications will be deferred to the 2015 fall semester.

He added that ongoing travel alerts from the Center For Disease Control prompted the decision.

"We’ve tried to do that based off sound judgment. We’re trying to use just some common sense," Morgan said.

"If the CDC doesn’t want us going there, we don’t want those students coming here for the interim."

Morgan says the deferment is only temporary and the university will continue to follow governmental health guidelines.

The decision comes a day after U.S. Representative Ed Whitfield called on President Barack Obama to enact a travel ban for west Africa countries with confirmed cases.

Among countries with Ebola outbreaks, Nigeria is now free of the disease, according to the CDC.

Other regional universities didn’t provide official comment by deadline.
