More than two hundred high school students from the region are expected to attend Murray State University’s first annual Math Day on Tuesday.
Students will compete in a math competition and learn about careers in mathematics through a student and alumni panel discussion. Math Day Chair and Assistant Mathematics professor Elizabeth Donovan says she hopes the event encourages students to pursue majors in mathematics.
“I think a lot of us that come in are not really sure what you can do with it. Just kind of bringing that awareness to the teachers, to the students and just kind of bringing together students in the area I think will help to garner greater understanding of mathematics in general and hopefully lead to more math majors in the future,” says Donovan.
Donovan says the event is free through funding from an MSU Strategic Plan grant, Jesse D. Jones, the Student Chapter of the Association for Women in Mathematics, and university STEM departments.
