Monroe Co. Judge-Executive Among Republicans Supporting Democrat Jack Conway

Kentucky County Judge/Executive Assoc.

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Jack Conway’s campaign team is trumpeting the support of several Republicans who have endorsed him instead of their party's nominee, Matt Bevin.

The new wave of "Republicans for Conway" comes a month after the first group, which included Monroe County judge-executive Tommy Willett.

Willett says he would have supported hometown Republican James Comer "110 percent" but feels Bevin isn’t ready to be governor. Comer lost to Bevin in May's primary by only 83 votes.

“Mr. Bevin is not in touch with rural Kentucky," Willett said. "I don’t think he’s in touch with what rural county Kentuckians are all about and what they need.”

Willett says he thinks Conway would address rural infrastructure needs better than Bevin.

A Bevin campaign spokesman responded by saying Conway "can tout the support of whoever he wants” and that Bevin is fully prepared to assume the role of governor after November’s election.

The new wave of "Republicans for Conway" announced Tuesday included the following Kentuckians, mostly from the Lexington and Louisville areas:

  • Dr. Steven Reiss, physician, Jefferson County
  • Jennifer Stepp, aircraft maintenance supervisor, Bullitt County
  • Rob Sarrantonio, retired police officer, Woodford County
  • Michael Houlihan, businessman, Jefferson County
  • Stacy Houlihan, homemaker, Jefferson County
  • Alex Gift, businessman, Jefferson County
