Representatives from the Kentucky chapter of Moms Deserve Action for Gun Sense in America are keeping close ties with the 2018 General Assembly.

Members make their presence known at judiciary committee meetings donning red shirts. Laura Johnsrude of Prospect attended the House Judiciary Committee the week following the mass shooting at a Florida high school.

“Politicians and candidates are bringing up the topic and in the past in Kentucky I always had the impression that they did not want to bring up the topic of gun violence prevention and, that is not true anymore,” said Johnsrude.

Kentucky Chapter President Connie Courtney said they attend just in case bills to lessen gun restrictions are called.

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Joe Fischer said some 15 gun related bills are before his membership. He doesn’t expect action on those measures this session.

“It’s unlikely that we’ll get to those bills this session, but I think we need to have a discussion over the summer, the interim, to look at gun policy throughout the state,” said Fischer.

Fischer predicts gun restrictions of any kind will be difficult to pass in Kentucky.
