Recovery efforts continue in the Mississippi River near Columbia, Kentucky to clean up a recent clarified slurry oil spill. Coast Guard crews are focusing on two anomalies near the site where a vessel collided September 2nd.

They’re using an environmental clamshell tool to remove oiled sediment from the river’s bottom. In addition, oil snare lines have been deployed to pick up the slurry in less concentrated areas.

Sonar assessment and hydrocarbon sampling will determine when those areas have been thoroughly cleaned.

The spill’s original cause remains under investigation.
