Media Release: WKMS “Giving Tuesday” Fundraiser Brings Food to Soup for the Soul

Listeners across the region made special year-end gifts to WKMS on “Giving Tuesday,” December 1st, and helped feed community members who need a hot nutritious meal. WKMS Staff members solicited year-end donations for the station during a special one-day drive with the help of two business partners, Independence Bank of Murray and Ashland of Calvert City.

Independence Bank committed to pay the cost of one meal to Soup for the Soul in Murray for each gift the station received on “Giving Tuesday.” Soup for the Soul is a non-profit soup kitchen serving 75-100 people five days a week. Going above and beyond the gifts made that day, Independence Bank generously agreed to pay for 100 meals during this holiday season.

Ashland of Calvert City helped WKMS gain new members by contributing to the overall fundraising total with each new WKMS member gained on that day. Director of Development Asia Burnett reports, “Many wonderful listeners took advantage of the special day to make a big impact on WKMS and on a community non-profit that serves people in need.”

On the air the staff celebrated a great year of public radio in our rural region and the ways listener contributions have served the station this year including increased fundraising efficiency eliminating 10 fundraising days from the on-air schedule. Other accomplishments include new sound board in the main studio, Emergency Alert System for the classical channels, a new mobile website with a responsive design, Kentucky Public Radio statewide newscasts and more.

Year-end donations can be made to WKMS through December 31, 2015, by giving online at wkms.org or by check made out to “WKMS/MSU Foundation and mailed to 2018 University Station, Murray KY 42071.

As the year comes to a close, WKMS continues airing special holiday programs with “Holidays Sound Good” and a full schedule is available online at wkms.org.
