The McCracken County Sheriff’s Department is warning people of phone scams in which the caller is pretending to be a member of local law enforcement to extort money.
Sheriff Jon Hayden said in a release Tuesday residents have called his office stating they had received calls from someone claiming to be “Sergeant Davis.”
The scammer says an active arrest warrant is in the recipient's name and says they need send money to resolve the matter or else they’d be arrested. The person has a male voice and is telling people to purchase Green Dot cards from Kroger and read the numbers over the phone.
Hayden said law enforcement agencies do not handle arrest warrants or civil cases in this manner. He said his office is in the process of shutting down the false phone number. The number used by scammers is 270-908-3003. He said dozens of local residents have fallen for this scam over the past few days.
