Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell says he “strongly supports” President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for U.S. Attorney General. Trump named Republican Alabama Senator Jeff Sessions for the role today along with other key posts.
In a statement, McConnell praised Sessions for his work on prison reforms including reducing sentencing disparities for some drug offenses and combating sexual assault. Sessions was one of the first to ally with Trump's campaign.
As NPR reports, he has embraced an anti-immigration platform and is conservative on issues including same-sex marriage and stem-cell research. The Senate will need to confirm the nomination.
Loretta Lynch is the current Attorney General.
