The health insurance provider Anthem is investigating a massive security breach with hackers accessing the information of 80 million people including the company’s own employees.
Murray State University is just one employer that provides Anthem benefits to its employees.
Vice President for Finance and Administrative Services Jackie Dudley says the university is still waiting on information from the health insurance company about the breach’s impact.
“We’re just learning, just learning ourselves,” she said. “We were not notified until this morning, the university was not notified, that our employees were affected. We really don’t have additional information right now.”
Dudley says the insurer is still working to find out which customers’ social security numbers were accessed. She says the company has not seen any evidence that the information has been misused.
“It is potentially a misuse of information,” Dudley said. “So Anthem hasn’t come out and actually said that personally identifiable information, which would include an individual’s name and social security number, has been misused.”
Other information made vulnerable include names, health ID numbers, birth dates and addresses.
