Madisonville City Council OKs 3 Percent Restaurant Tax

City of Madisonville

Madisonville is instituting a 3 percent restaurant tax beginning January 1.

The city council approved the measure Monday night by a 4-2 margin. The revenue generated from the tax will be transferred to the Hopkins County Tourist and Convention Commission to promote the area in an effort to spark economic development.

Council members Barry McGraw and Bill Smith cast the dissenting votes against the 3 percent tax, which is the maximum allowed under state law for a city of Madisonville’s size.

The tax will apply to all restaurants within Madisonville city limits. School lunches and some temporary food stands and street concessions will be exempt.
