Little River Band's Wayne Nelson Preview's Glema Mahr Center Show

An Evening with Little River Band at the Glema Mahr Center for the Arts on campus at Madisonville Community College starts at 7:30 p.m. this Saturday. Little River Band was formed in Melbourne, Australia in 1975. On Sounds Good, Kate Lochte speaks with bass guitarist and vocalist Wayne Nelson about his being the bridge between the original band and the current lineup that brings new energy and arrangements to the classic hits, like "Reminiscing."

Wayne Nelson says it's an honor to be on stage and play songs that connect with their fans, to let people get in touch with the feelings attached to their music. He says the connection to the crowd is what it makes it worthwhile.

Little River Band started in Australia, but gained success in the US and Canada. Now, the band lives in the US, and has one Australian member, Greg Hind, who has been with the band for 16 years. Nelson has been in the band for 35 years. Initially, he was the only American in the band. They were looking for a bass player who could sing and he says he happened to be in the right place at the right time. The rest of the band is made up by Nashville producers, musicians, writers and award-winners.

"If you listen to Little River Band's music, there are twists and turns in it, but the over gist of what we do is simple, straight-forward, vocal-driven reflections on day to day stuff. We took that same concept to the studio with the backing of a record label, which hadn't happened for over 20 years, so we were very happy to 'not break the mold' if you will. We looked for great songs that we could relate to and that's the key to being able to sing them and present them on a daily basis."

At the GlemaMahr Center, the audience will hear the biggest hits. The big favorites include "Reminiscing" (joined by a young fan joining in for a horn solo), "Cool Change" - a perennial favorite, and "Night Owls" - the first song Nelson sang for the band, and "Lonesome Loser." Nelson calls the performance an 'interactive scrapbook,' where you hear a song and it takes you back to a certain place and time in your life.

Wayne Nelson is vocalist and bass guitarist of Little River Band and is the artist bridging the original band with the current ensemble. The GlemaMahr Center for the Arts at Madisonville Community College hosts An Evening with Little River Band at 7:30 p.m. this Saturday. Tickets range from $30 to $35 at glemacenter.org.
