Lexington Lutheran Pastor Sees Significance in Martin Luther Anniversary

A central Kentucky church pastor believes Martin Luther’s 95 theses, offered 500 years ago, still have implications in today’s society.

Luther is considered a key figure in the protestant reformation. Mike Heubner is the pastor of Our Redeemer Church in east Lexington.

“Luther came into a setting that was very legalistic, superstitious in some ways and you can see that in our contemporary climate too and what he was saying was you can’t depend on yourself, you can’t depend on your inner disposition,” said Heubner.

Huebner said, in some ways, government today has assumed the role that church and God use to hold in the hearts and minds of people. He said division is often found in government.

“These are ultimate issues and if you don’t see eye to eye then it is much more divisive I think in a world where God isn’t God anymore but something political is,” said Huebner.

Members from area Lutheran churches including Our Redeemer participated in a ceremony this past weekend, re-enacting one account of Luther hammering the 95 theses to a door at the All Saints Church in Wittenberg Germany.
