A state representative from Lee County has proposed two bills that would re-draw the map of Kentucky counties and school districts.
The proposal would consolidate counties if they have a population of less than 50,000 and merge school districts in those counties.
Republican State Representative Toby Herald of Beattyville said he filed House Bills 242 and 243 so counties and school districts would have a larger tax base. He said local loyalty to schools would not be affected.
“All schools will stay in place where they’re at now. They’ll go to the same schools. Nothing changes there. The school will still be named the same school. All I’m doing is consolidating the central office,” said Herald.
Some school superintendents have spoken out in opposition to the proposal, saying small school districts allow educators to make decisions based on the needs of local students.
