KYTC Warns of Traffic Delays During Eclipse

greatamericaneclipse.com

In three weeks, a total solar eclipse is expected to bring nearly 500,000 visitors and traffic delays to ten counties in the path of  totality across west Kentucky.

According to a Kentucky Transportation Cabinet press release, travelers will start arriving three days before the eclipse with a “final surge” on the morning of the event.  Public Information Officer Keith Todd said residents should expect long travel times in the days leading up to and following the eclipse.

“We’re looking at pretty much major traffic issues the afternoon of the eclipse as everyone that has driven in for the day starts to travel home,” Todd said.

Traffic along Interstate 24 and 69, Pennyrile Parkway and Kentucky Route 80 is expected to be congested for several days leading up to and following the eclipse. Todd said people should make viewing plans in advance including access to restrooms and food. He said he urges residents to treat the eclipse like a snowstorm and stock up on food, water and gas. He also said there could be cell service interruptions and advises bringing maps or satellite-based GPS devices.
