KYTC Examing Bridge and Developing Options

By Shelly Baskin

Murray, KY – Kentucky Transportation Cabinet divers are in the water today examining an east pier of the Eggner's Ferry bridge. The pier was the closest to the point of impact in last week's collision with a cargo vessel that collapsed a 300 foot section of the roadway. What the divers uncover will be a major factor in determining the crossing's future. KYTC Spokesman Chuck Wolfe says their options are limited until they assess the structure's stability. Divers won't plant any monitoring sensors at this time, but they will look at the lake floor to see if the piers have shifted. Wolfe says once they've examined the bridge they will determine whether or not repair is feasible until the new span comes into service.
