Every five days a Kentucky infant dies from a sudden unexplained death. That’s according to the National Center for Fatality Review and Prevention, The Fayette Health Department hosted a training program last week on risk factors and investigative practices.
Kentucky Unexplained Infant Deaths Rank High Nationally
Participants working in the coroner’s office, law enforcement, child welfare, and public health got briefed on sudden infant death issues.
Abby Collier with the national infant safety group led the day-long workshop. She says re-enactment is one best-practice technique used during investigation of an unexplained death. She says that results in what she called a “thorough examination of the environment that the infant was in, lots of pictures being taken, a doll re-enactment with the family.”
Holly Clendenin with the Lexington Health Department says infants should always sleep alone in a crib with no toys, bedding, or other items on their backs on a firm surface.
