The Kentucky Secretary of State is asking for additional poll workers for the upcoming May 22 primary election.

Secretary Alison Lundergan Grimes said in a release that there is a shortage of poll workers at the local level.

Grimes said it takes 15,000 poll workers to conduct elections across the state.

Poll workers must be registered voters and are ineligible if they have changed their political affiliation within the past year.

Workers also cannot be a candidate, or spouse or immediate relative of a candidate on the ballot.

Poll workers are compensated $10 to attend a mandatory training session and a minimum of $60 per Election Day, as well as additional payment for mileage.

Each county board of elections sets the rate for compensation.

Voters interested must call 502-782-7402 before 5 p.m. eastern time on Wednesday May 16.
