Ky. Motorcycle Group Lends Support to Auto Cycles Bill

Members of Kentucky’s motorcycle community are seeking legislative clarification regarding auto cycles in the areas of licensing, insurance, and sales. So far, the three-wheeled vehicle with an inside cab hasn’t shown up on many Kentucky roads, but, they are expected to increase in number.

Former Kentucky Motorcycle Association President Jay Huber says questions persist. “Right now there’s sort of that gray area," said Huber. "Even for law enforcement, do you categorize and treat this under motor vehicle statutes or do you categorize and treat it under motor cycle statutes? And, in some cases, those differ." -- The senate bill unanimously passed out of the House Transportation Committee this week.

Huber says the auto cycle is currently licensed as a motor cycle. The legislation would allow the vehicles to be sold at used car lots, but not at new car dealerships. House Transportation Committee Chair Hubie Collins expressed an interest in allowing auto cycles to be sold at both types of businesses.

Bill Sponsor C.B. Embry is hopeful the measure will be heard in the full House.
