KY Budget Note

By Tony McVeigh

Frankfort, KY – Kentucky House Speaker Greg Stumbo says personal service contracts are getting more attention in the ongoing search for ways to slice state spending. House leaders continue to meet behind the scenes to craft various budget scenarios, but they're keeping mum about where the talks are heading. While discussing the possibility of furloughs, which he opposes, House Speaker Greg Stumbo did reveal that personal service contracts are being closely scrutinized. Those are contracts with outside vendors for things like legal advice.

"We know by cabinet, the number. What we don't know - it would take a great deal of study to see exactly what those various things do and make a judgment about whether they're needed or not."

Stumbo says the state is spending hundreds of millions of dollars a year on such contracts. Stumbo hopes to be able to say more about the direction the budget talks are going by early next week.
