KHS to Expand African American and Jewish Collections in Hopkinsville

Kentucky Historical Society, Facebook

The Kentucky Historical Society is partnering with the Museums of Historic Hopkinsville-Christian County to document the shared histories of African Americans and Jews in Hopkinsville.

The historical society and museums will host “Integrating Segregated Histories: Part 1” on May 20 for Hopkinsville and Christian County residents who have historical documents or items to add to digital collections. Museums executive director Alissa Keller said the event will help tell a more complete story of the community.

“Hopkinsville has a rich cultural heritage and typically as far as the recording and documenting of our history have gone, the African American community and our Jewish population have not been as well represented,” Keller said.

Historical Society staff will digitize photos and documents and take pictures of small items. The collections will be available to view online. A grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities Common Heritage funds the project.
