Kentucky House Votes to Impose Fees for Some Handicap Placards

MATT MARKGRAF, WKMS

The Kentucky House of Representatives passed a bill on Tuesday that would begin charging people for multiple handicap parking placards.

House Bill 81 would still allow disabled people to receive one handicap parking placard for free, but it would cost $10 to receive a duplicate.

The placard renewing cycle would extend from two years to six years. A parent or guardian of a disabled person may also apply for a placard on their behalf.

A statement to obtain a placard must be made on a form prescribed by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.

The bill cleared the House on Tuesday by a vote of 85-10 and now heads to the state Senate.

In 2008, Kentucky had issued more than 32,000 placards. In 2009, after the state stopped charging a fee, the state issued 209,000 placards.
