Kentucky Education Approve New Standards

By AP

Frankfort, KY – Kentucky officials have enacted a new set of national English and math standards for elementary and secondary students, the first state in the country to formally sign off on the guidelines. The vote was taken Wednesday in Versailles during a joint meeting of the Kentucky Board of Education, the Council on Postsecondary Education and the Education Professional Standards Board.

While some of the specifics are still being worked out, governors and state education commissioners in 48 states and Washington, D.C., last year endorsed a draft of what they believe students across the country should know as they graduate each grade. Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear attended the meeting and called the effort "another significant step along that road of reform."
