Water contamination issues in Madisonville are under control according to the Kentucky Division of Water.

Customers of Madisonville Municipal Water received notices Monday of a water standard violation. DOW Spokesman LannyBrannock says the utility is doing everything in it’s power to lower the levels but says at no time was the water unsafe to consume.

“There is nothing the public needs to do. They don’t need to boil their water or take any corrective actions. If the situation changes, where the water is no longer safe to drink they will be notified within 24 hours.” Brannock said.

Brannock says the contamination level is minimum with the rates exceeding only .002 mg/L at .082 mg/L. The standard is no more than .080 mg/L.

The contaminants, known as trihalomethanes, are believed to have come from organic chemicals that form when disinfectants react with organic matter in the water.

Brannock says Madisonville gets water from several sources, making it more complicated to treat. However, the utility has hired a contractor to help with compliance.
