Kentuckians Have Mixed Views on Affordable Care Act

A new statewide poll shows public opinion is split on the Affordable Care Act.

The Kentucky Health Issues Poll released Thursday says 41 percent of Kentuckians polled have an unfavorable view of the law. 39 percent had a favorable view, and 20 percent hadn’t made up their minds yet.

University of Louisville Political Science professor Dewey Clayton says the law has been controversial since it was first proposed and how you refer to it matters. Calling the ACA ‘ Obamacare’ or ‘kynect,’ which is the name of Kentucky’s state-based insurance exchange,  can affect how a person thinks of the law.

"Oftentimes, how you market something, how you get the message out will determine how people think of something. A lot of people were not even aware that kynect was essentially the state level version of the Affordable Care Act," said Clayton.

The poll also shows that more than half of Kentucky adults still don't have enough information about the law. Those with less than a high school diploma and adults living below 200 percent of the Federal Poverty Line were most likely not to have enough information.
