Jobs Cut, Dining Halls Closed as Soldiers Deploy

By AP

Fort Campbell, KY – Fort Campbell is closing dining halls and possibly some gyms as the post looks to save money while soldiers are deployed in a tight budget year. Army installations worldwide are facing reduced funding this year as the military tries to hold down non-war spending even as total defense spending rises. The Army curtailed plans for deeper cuts earlier this year after hearing concerns from Congress and soldiers that services for military families might suffer.

Fort Campbell spokeswoman Kelly DeWitt said several dining halls have been closed as about 20,000 soldiers from the 101st Airborne Division prepare to deploy to Afghanistan this year. The move will save the post $2 million but eliminated the jobs of about 200 contracted workers.
