Illinois Attorney General Reports Collecting Nearly $1B

Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan’s office says it collected nearly $1 billion revenue last year from settlements, fines and penalties.

The sum includes Illinois’ $52.5 million share from a Standard and Poor’s settlement.  That settlement was over alleged misrepresentations about the processes it used to assign credit ratings to mortgage-backed securities that sparked the 2008 financial crisis.

The total also includes $265 million in tobacco litigation and $320 million collected through cases, including state property damage and child support enforcement.

The overall 2015 amount is down from the year before when it was a record $1.3 billion.  Madigan’s office says the number fluctuates, but averages $1 billion annual.

The 2015 total doesn’t include Illinois’ $22.5 million share of Morgan Stanley’s national settlement, which was announced last month.
