In a last minute move to the finish, I'll Have Another won the 138th Kentucky Derby.
There was strong favorite in this year’s group of 20 thoroughbreds making the Run for the Roses. But Bodemeister starting at 6 to 1 odds took a quick lead out of the gate, which he held for most of the race.
It wasn’t until the final seconds that I’ll Have Another and jockey Mario Gutierrez made their move.
"I’ll have another takes the lead in the derby and ups the line....I’ll Have Another wins the derby... a first winner ride for Mario Gutierrez," was the call as I'll Have Another crossed the line.
I’ll Have Another finished the one and one-quarter mile race in just over two minutes and one second. It was trainer Doug O’Neills first Derby victory.
“And he’s three for three this year, and uh, Maryland here he come baby,” says O'Neills.
Bodemiester finished a close second. Dullahan came in third.
