The Hopkinsville City Council is set to name Clayton Sumner as its next police chief in a special called meeting tonight.

Sumner has served as interim police chief since Guy Howie retired last summer.

He has been with Hopkinsville Police Department since 2002 and was promoted to Deputy Chief in May 2014.

Sumner has worked as a patrolman with the gang unit and trained as a hostage negotiator. He has also been a part of the detective division in addition to supervising the patrol division after being promoted to a lieutenant in 2010. He became a captain in 2012.
