The Jackson Purchase Historical Society is holding a commemoration Saturday for a member of the Calloway County National Guard who died during the Mexican Expedition of 1916.
The Kentucky National Guard Memorial website states Lieutenant Nathaniel G. Hale died at the age of 24 from an accidental gunshot wound near El Paso, Texas. He is buried in Murray. The military operation involved Mexican revolutionary Pancho Villa’s campaign in New Mexico, prompting American troops led by General John Pershing to cross the Mexican border in an effort to capture Villa.
Speakers include Murray State Professor Emeritus of History Dr. Bill Schell and local historian Greg Miller.
Schell specializes in Mexican and Latin American history. Miller has been pursuing commemoration of Hale and the local unit involved in the Mexican Expedition with the National Guard, state and local government.
The event is at 10:30 a.m. at the National Guard Armory in Murray, free and open to the public.
