The aftermath of passage of a 21 billion dollar state budget will be evident this week. It includes funding cuts to state universities and has prompted a hiring freeze at Eastern Kentucky University.
That word went out Friday from Eastern President Michael Benson before House and Senate lawmakers had cast their final votes on the much debated and negotiated two year spending plan.
In an email from Eastern President Michael Benson, the president wrote, “knowing the mandated cuts we now face, we shift from discussion of plans to response implementation.”
The freeze on hiring will remain in place until the EKU Board of Regents meets on April 27th.
The action came at the direction of Board Chair Craig Turner. The hiring freeze applies to all university positions. The board is expected to discuss the matter further at its meeting later this month.
