Hickman, Ky. Mayor David Lattus is in Washington D.C. as part of the Mississippi River Cities & Towns Initiative, which aims to create a coordinated voice and bring national attention back to the country’s longest river.

The group is asking Congress to fully fund $200 million in the fiscal year 2016 budget for the federal pre-disaster mitigation program.

Lattus said he is honored to represent the commonwealth in the initiative.

“I’m excited about the progress that we’ve made in the last three years and I think we’re headed down the right path,” Lattus said Thursday during a conference call. “We stay together and we refuse to let people separate us, and I think this initiative is growing.”

The mayors are also collaborating with the Dutch embassy on issues like water quality, coastal restoration and disaster preparedness. The low-lying Netherlands is a leader in flood control and has sustained many major flood events.
