Henderson Co Schools Cutting 80 Positions Next Year

Some Henderson County teachers will not be returning to the classroom next school year.

Faced with a $6.7 million shortfall, the school system is cutting positions.  Layoff notices are going out this week to teachers at every school.

School system spokeswoman Julie Wisher says about 80 positions are being cut.

“Some of that will come through retirees, and just general attrition and the others will come from, staff non-renewals," said Wisher.

Wisher tells parents and students to expect the same level of education.

“Our student teacher ratio isn’t going to increase over the maximum size allotted," said Wisher. "We have very dedicated and passionate teachers that will continue to work towards excellence.”

The biggest impact will be on teachers, though a few layoffs are occurring at the district level.  To help balance the budget, the school system is also reviewing spending at the central office.

Superintendent Marganna Stanley says the budget cuts will not mean a reduction in services or programs. She adds Henderson County students will continue to receive the same quality education as they have in prior years.
