Flood waters are are moving down the Ohio River and prompted a flood warning for manyRiver Kentucky counties.
The National Weather Service outlook shows water levels have risen some 6 feet above the 39-foot flood stage in Paducah.
NWS meteorologist Robin Smith says the saturated ground from recent snowmelt along with heavy rain factored into the flooding.
“Heavy rainfall across the lower Ohio river basin over the past weekend and then to rise with the heavy rain we had last week," said Smith. "We are looking for moderate flood conditions at Paducah, at the Grand Chain Dam and developing at Cairo later on.”
Other areas along the river are experiencing only minor flooding. NWS recommends residents to refrain from piloting recreational boats, trucks or sport utility vehicles through flooded areas. Smith says water levels may not subside to normal levels until sometime next week.
